We are the media and the media is us. That statement is very broad and is so for a good reason. Through out the world and the history of our society, media has transformed, melted, bent, molded and made our society and culture what it is today. But at the same time, our culture and society has done the exact same thing to media. It is hard to realize or imagine a time without televisions, telephones, fax machines, printers, computers, cell phones, pagers and other electronic technologies that have made our lives, hopefully, stress-free. Those items were and are still being invented today to make our lives easier and better, but are they really making life easier and better? Media plays a big part in defining what society wants and gets. Society tells our media what society wants. There are both upsides and downsides to the media, one saying what both of us want and two doing what both of us want.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  First let’s start with the downsides of our media. Our media censors us and desensitizes us to our own society. Lets take for example the news, in news the stories that air are stories that include blood and guts. Why? Because those stories reflect the morals of society. We would rather actually see someone slashed, shot, run over, or cut than be asked to imagine what happened. The reason for preferring violent images comes from and stems from movies. It is not a good action flick unless someone loses their life or good guy, bad guy. It is what we are used to. Even in the fifties there was Zorro and the masked ranger. The good guy always had to win no matter what. This way of thinking is where the media gets their ideas. Another downside of media is the negative image they give the United States. If you go to Ireland and ask them how they thought Americans lived, they would probably say that we are stuck up, violent, non-caring, money grubbing and work obsessed people. They get this idea from American sitcoms that air there. One for Example is The Simpsons. They think that all males sit on the couch, drink beer, and are not responsible. They think that little boys go around and cause trouble and get kicked out of school. As for little girls, they think they are angels and never do anything wrong unless possessed by the devil. Finally, they think that females are in charge of keeping the males out of trouble, as well. Of course, this i... ...t are kids going to do if you tell them that they cannot have it. They will some how or another get their hands on it, whether it be from another kid or buying it themselves. And that is exactly what happened. He got the news press after him, the news media after him, MTV did a interview with him, and all because parents did not like his lyrics. My response to them is then do not listen to him and do not by his records. The only way a music artist makes any money is if the records sell. Now, on the other hand, if any of this happened to a politician their career would be over. They would never be believed and many people would disregard what they say. Again it all started because the media opened their mouth and printed it on paper. Overall media is a good form of communication and reinsures that this country would not survive without it if you took it away from them right now, but if we never had media in the first place, this might have a different answer. Media is all around and you can never get away from it. Always be aware of what they are saying, but do not take their word as Gospel. They are just expressing the same right all of us have. Just remember to express your own.

Native Americans vs. African Americans Essay

In today’s society there are many people living in poverty. All across America there are different projects and reservations where the less fortunate reside. Statistics show that mostly minorities live in these different locations. Native Americans and African Americans are two of the more popular races living in these places. The group suffering the most in these situations is the youth. Although both Native American and African American children living on a reservation or in the projects experience a terrible community, have little to no faith, and a broken family structure, African American youth living in the projects have it worse than Native American children living on a reservation. First, one of the most common living situations for less fortunate African Americans is in the projects. A project is a public living environment that is government owned. Although these buildings are government owned they are far from nice looking. Most of the buildings have no windows, are run down, dirty, and old. The government’s main goal is to maintain affordable housing not to make them the best looking homes in town. The projects aren’t a good environment for a child to be raised. Throughout these neighborhoods different gangs can be found. These gangs are built to defend the different areas in the projects. The gangs bring major violence to the area and are one of the main causes of death. At a young age children join these gangs and are raised to be violent. Many of them decorate the buildings they are living in with graffiti expressing their gang colors, symbols, or motto. In contrast, while Native American youth also live in poor housing, the environment is safer than the projects. A reservation is an area set aside for a specific type of land use or activity, or for use by a particular group of people, mostly Native Americans. Similar to the projects, houses on a reservation are old, beat down, and dirty. The houses on a reservation are government owned as well. Although these two locations are very similar they also differ. The reservation is a safer place then the projects. On the reservation there is a couple cases of mild violence but they aren’t as severe as the violence in the projects. Therefore, the reservations environment is a better environment than the projects. Secondly, many of the young people have no faith growing up in the projects. A lot of them believe their only way out of the projects is to become a basketball or football player or to become a top selling rap artist. At as young as sixteen years of age most African American males end up in jail, deceased, or selling drugs. A lot of them are also lead to believe that if they don’t do what every other man on the streets is doing, then they won’t make it anywhere in life. On the reservation the kids believe their only way out is to become NBA players or â€Å"powwowers†. Powwower’s are traditional Native American cheerleaders or dancers. Much like the African Americans growing up in the projects, the life expectancy rate for those living on a reservation is in the mid forties. Considering that both of these locations are in the United States mid forties is very young of age. Many of these people don’t live very long because they don’t have enough money to take care of themselves as well as their families. They also aren’t able to live a healthy lifestyle which shortens their days. Death is common in the two locations which leaves these two young groups wondering what’s beyond the age forty. Lastly, family structure is very important in a household. In the projects many of the homes lack a very strong family structure. Children growing up in the projects nine times out of ten don’t have both parents in the home. Most of them are drug dealers, alcoholics, prostitutes, or doing any and everything to try and provide for the child. Although these parents are trying to provide for their children a lot of the time they are also on welfare. Moreover, these children’s parents aren’t ever around, they sometimes go days without having anything to eat. Many of the young men follow after the footsteps of their father, older brother, or uncles which is why this cycle has continued for so long. Native Americans typically stick together as a unit. According to Sherman Alexie, an award winning author who grew up on a reservation, â€Å"Native American children are taught to be suspicious of Caucasian people. † Native Americans teach this to their children because there are many people in America that are against minorities and believe that just because they are the majority they’re better. A lot of the parents on a reservation go from job to job not being able to keep one job for a long period of time. Many of these parents are also alcoholics. On the other hand, some of these families on these reservations are very family oriented unlike the African American families in the projects. These Native American families have up to seventeen family members living in one house. They keep their families very close and are very supportive of one another rather then being against each other like African Americans. The parents watch over their children to make sure they don’t go down the wrong path in life. Although these families are experiencing hard times they cheer each other up and manage to smile every once in a while. Therefore, the Native Americans family structure is stronger then African Americans. In conclusion, Native American youth living on a reservation have it better then African American youth living in the projects. Both of these minorities are going through some hardships. From alcoholic parents to not having anything to eat they both are suffering as young children. Native American families provide a safer living environment, work harder, and look after one another, where as African Americans are against one another, on the streets all day, and are strongly associated with violence. As the years go on these families are hoping that the government will separate people in the projects and those living on reservations and provide them both with a better living situation. If these environments are separated the United States will be one step closer to eliminating violence in America.

We Know What They do in the dark Death. Money. Neverending. Something that is done every day, every hour, every minute, every second. From animals that can be our pets to wild ones. We do this so we can test products that humans will use. So we don’t risk ourselves or our family members. Although most think animal testing is great it’s clearly not because, these experiments kill these animals all the time, we’ve found better ways to do this testing of products, and it cost tons of money for our country. The worst thing about animal experimentation is the death. This shouldn’t be happening to these animals. Just think about the feelings they have. Animal abuse can and will put you in jail. This is inhumane and is considered animal abuse, yet the government is allowing them to be treated this way. Not caring about it, as long as they can hide there support. The scaffold is a symbol of isolation and guilt throughout Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter. All three of the scenes that take place on the scaffold show major character development that deal with the realities of being alone in suffering, punishment, and guilt. All the scenes have at least the four main Characters: Hester, Pearl, Rev. Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth. Chillingworth is Hester’s husband’s pseudo name to protect his identity while he exacts revenge. Since the scaffold scenes are such major parts of Hawthorne’s story, I believe that they also directly impact the overall theme. The first scaffold scene isolates Hester and reveals some of Dimmesdale’s guilt. Even though crowds surround Hester and Dimmesdale, they are alone in suffering. â€Å"I will not speak†¦ my child†¦ shall never know an earthy [father] (47).† Here Hester denies the people of Boston and clergymen the knowledge of who the father is. Because she will not tell who the father is and Dimmesdale will not confess himself, they are separated as Dimmesdale carries on with his life without the public knowing of his sin. This adds to my experience as a soldier. The word soldier binds me within the commands of my master, the emperor of Portugal. The period of discovery was a golden age for soldiers like me. The task that we are entrusted to perform is so strenuous; however, the provision of motivation and encouragement of the emperors generated an urge within us to expose our duties and responsibilities in an effective manner. Along with this, the diversified and cultural heritage of Mexico attracted me very much. Perceiving the whole scenario from the Spanish conquistador, I feel privileged that I along with my co-warriors have emerged successful in conquering the ravished capital of Aztec. I can give two connotations to this issue. The three things that struck me about the Aztec civilization are religion, architecture and its tragic collapse. In case of religion, I feel sympathetic to the native people as they are God-fearing and superstitious. It makes me wonder that for satisfying the Gods, the people do not even hesitate to sacrifice people. The mesmerizing artifacts make me wonder about the capability of the craftsmen at that time. The creations are an indication of the labour put in by the artisans to produce such masterpieces. Lack of control over such a rich cultural heritage resulted in the tragic collapse. Rebellions were a common feature in the Aztec empire. However, Tenochtitlan overpowered the Aztecs, which turned the rich cultural heritage into ruins. Herein, lays my sympathy for the helpless condition of the Aztec soldiers to preserve the culture, tradition, symbol of their native land. Delving deep into the issue, lack of consciousness of the soldiers towards the hostile intentions of the Tenochtitlan can be considered as the major cause behind the conquest of the Aztec civilization. Absence of the leader aggravated the complexities of the soldiers in terms of handling the crisis period. Scarcity of food and epidemics added to the already collapsed empire of Aztec. This situation is a typical example of how a rich, cultural heritage collapsed to ruins. On one hand, it enhances my personality in terms of overpowering upon the Aztec On the other hand, somewhere in the core of my heart, I feel sympathetic for the soldiers, due to their helplessness (Abad, Davies Zanden, 2012). Countering this, failure of the enemy is the only suess for a soldier. This motive qualifies me as an efficient soldier, which enhances my personality. However, my victory in Tenochtitlan is the one of the other shades of my victory. When I revert back to my performance at conquests, I feel that it is my responsibility to salute to my motherland, Spain. This feeling is the major drive behind penning down this reflection, which enables me to question my performance as a conquistador. Delving deep into the matter, conquests means an addition to the stock of territories in case of the emperors. This connotation bears resemblance with my case. My capability to conquest the capitals of Aztec and Tenochtitlan, glorifies the name of my emperor in the whole of the Spanish sands (Kennedy, Cohen Piehl, 2016). This signifies my broad mindedness in terms of my emperors success. Sometimes, I feel if it had been my success, I would have been happy and contended. Pondering upon my plight, returning back to Spain might open new avenues, before me. Effective utilization of these avenues might uplift my position from an ordinary soldier to a high ranking official. Behind this objective lies the vision to bring back the diversity and cultural heritage of Mexico, which vanished in the encounter with the Spanish emperors (Pennock, 2012). One thing that I want to bring back is the feather headdress, which has become obsolete due to the collapse of the Aztec civilization. This restoration would restore the lost glory and culture, which is the symbol of customs and tradition of the Aztecs. Viewing it from other perspective, restoration of the part of costume would simultaneously restore the lost glory and honor of the Aztecs in terms of their encounter with the Spanish soldiers (Len, 2012). The hope of restoring the diversity and cultural heritage enhances my individuality as a soldier. This motive might create a good image within the minds of my relatives, peers and others.
